ḤADĪTH OF THE DAY

Sunan at-Tirmithiy كتاب الزكاة باب ما جاء فى النهى عن المسألة
حَدَّثَنَا هَنَّادٌ حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الأَحْوَصِ عَنْ بَيَانِ بْنِ بِشْرٍ عَنْ قَيْسِ بْنِ أَبِى حَازِمٍ عَنْ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم يَقُولُ لأَنْ يَغْدُوَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَيَحْتَطِبَ عَلَى ظَهْرِهِ فَيَتَصَدَّقَ مِنْهُ فَيَسْتَغْنِىَ بِهِ عَنِ النَّاسِ خَيْرٌ لَهُ مِنْ أَنْ يَسْأَلَ رَجُلاً أَعْطَاهُ أَوْ مَنَعَهُ ذَلِكَ فَإِنَّ الْيَدَ الْعُلْيَا أَفْضَلُ مِنَ الْيَدِ السُّفْلَى وَابْدَأْ بِمَنْ تَعُولُ. قَالَ وَفِى الْبَابِ عَنْ حَكِيمِ بْنِ حِزَامٍ وَأَبِى سَعِيدٍ الْخُدْرِىِّ وَالزُّبَيْرِ بْنِ الْعَوَّامِ وَعَطِيَّةَ السَّعْدِىِّ وَعَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ مَسْعُودٍ وَمَسْعُودِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو وَابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ وَثَوْبَانَ وَزِيَادِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ الصُّدَائِىِّ وَأَنَسٍ وَحُبْشِىِّ بْنِ جُنَادَةَ وَقَبِيصَةَ بْنِ مُخَارِقٍ وَسَمُرَةَ وَابْنِ عُمَرَ. قَالَ أَبُو عِيسَى حَدِيثُ أَبِى هُرَيْرَةَ حَدِيثٌ حَسَنٌ صَحِيحٌ غَرِيبٌ يُسْتَغْرَبُ مِنْ حَدِيثِ بَيَانٍ عَنْ قَيْسٍ.
The Prophet, peace and blessings of God be upon him, said, "Verily, to go out in the early morning to gather wood on one's back, then give charity from it (i.e. from what was earned from its sale)--and thus be independent from people ['s charity] is better than to ask of anyone who might give or refuse. For indeed, the upper hand (which gives) is better than the lower hand (which begs). And start (the giving) with those you support (1)."
